Nowadays, an increasing number of official government procedures may be taken care of online. To do so, a DigiD is required. You can use a DigiD to log onto websites of the government and the healthcare sector. For instance, you can file a tax return, apply for rent benefit, make an appointment in the hospital, or request a remission of municipal taxes.

You can only apply for a DigiD if you are a resident of the Netherlands. To apply for your DigiD, you will need a Citizen Service Number (Burgerservicenummer - BSN), which you will receive at your registration appointment.

Even though the DigiD website is in English, the page for the application for a DigiD is only available in Dutch. There is an English guide to help you apply for the DigiD. Make sure to fill out the exact address you are registered at.

After filling out the application, a validation letter will be sent to your home address to prevent fraud.

Municipalities Voorschoten and Wassenaar offer their non-Dutch speaking European citizens services and e-forms in the English language with their eID.
