Financial Consequences in the Event of Death

Your Financials experiences include unfortunate events of people not having prepared sufficiently for the inevitable event of a family member’s passing. This is largely due to changes in family status, living circumstances, income changes and bad luck.

This is largely due to changes in family status, living circumstances, income changes and bad luck. Even when things have been done to mitigate financial risk for the survivor, it may not be up to date and as a result not adequate.

Even though the event is organized in Dutch only, interested international citizens sufficiently mastering the language may have an interest to attend. Marlène Kromhout of Dune Uitvaartbegeleiding and Mario van Teijlingen of Your Financials are organizing an informative meeting about financial consequences of death. It will be held on Monday 6 May from 19:30 to 21:00 in the Farewell House at Ambachtspad 24 in Voorschoten. The walk-in with coffee is from 19.00 hrs. You are welcome to attend the meeting free of charge, after registration via email.

What can you expect?

In a short presentation, financial advisor Mario van Teijlingen covers common financial consequences for the survivors in the event of death. The most important themes are housing and your mortgage, income, inheritance, tax and the will. There will be room to ask questions and afterwards you can chat over a drink.

"Our practice shows people are often unpleasantly surprised when their partner dies. During this meeting, we will tell you what to look out for and how you can also prepare yourself financially," says Mario. Funeral director Marlène Kromhout adds: "Of course, a lot depends on someone's personal situation. On 6 May, we would like to respond to some concrete questions from visitors. If it becomes too personal or complex, we will make a separate appointment to discuss further."

Examples and tips

Suppose your mortgage and your home are registered in two names. Do you have to do anything if one of you dies and if so, what then? How do you ensure that inheritance tax remains as low as possible? Is your will still valid or has your personal situation changed over the years? What are the consequences if one of the partners becomes incapacitated? These are just a few examples of questions and situations that will be addressed during the meeting on 6 May. Our most important tip: financial consequences of death can usually be well prepared to prevent unnecessary financial setbacks.
