Three days in the autumn holidays completely devoted to microscopy! Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, IBL (Institute of Biology) and the MARBLES project are joining forces to immerse yourself completely in the world of the very small.

First you can use a replica of one of the very first microscopes, a van Leeuwenhoek microscope, are you able to see something through the very small lens? That's where it all started… then look through a microscope of today and see how far we've come! With our digital microscopes you can count insect hairs, see live how sweat is produced and evaporate on your skin, and inspect your butterfly wings. Don't forget to bring things from home to research! Now that you know where we came from, let's look at the quests we are now undertaking using microscopy. We will explain the special MARBLES project to you. Researchers go very deep in the sea - among the fish, algae and sponges - in search of useful microbes. These are organisms that you can only see with a microscope. And with those microbes, they can do incredibly important things, such as developing new drugs and ways to improve agriculture.

If you want to learn more about the bacterial world and how scientists are trying to reveal and then apply Mother Nature's secrets to human, animal and plant health, come and visit us!

What is there to do? - The world up close; compare a van Leeuwenhoek microscope with what we can now and see everything you want! - Microscopy quiz; test your knowledge! For children from 7 years old. The quiz is done at 11am, 12pm and 1pm and lasts about 30 minutes. - See real sea microbes with a real microscope! MARBLES takes all kinds of organisms from their lab; see them for yourself and learn why they are so important. - How well do you clean your hands? You can grow bacteria very quickly on an agar plate. What grows on your hands and how well can you wash your hands? Label your pictures before and after washing your hands and see the difference at home after a few days.

For whom: For children from 4 years old with parents/guardians, the quiz is fun for children from 7 years old. In addition to the quiz, each part is also suitable for English-speaking visitors.
