Health care system
The Dutch health care system is referred to as a ‘gate-keeper system’; the General Practitioner (huisarts) or family doctor being the main link to any specialist or hospital. In order to see a medical specialist at the hospital, you will need to make an appointment with your huisarts to receive a referral.
Without exception, for every person who lives or works in the Netherlands health insurance is compulsory. Insurance reimburses part of your medical costs, depending on the cover you have chosen. You may also opt to take out additional insurance to cover costs not included in the basic package.
