What brought you to the Leiden region?

I am doing my master, Erasmus programme here, studying clinical neuropsychology. I had heard before that Leiden is a perfect city because lots of exchange students are here, plus the university is really famous and has a good reputation. All true.

How long have you been living in the Netherlands?

I have been living here for 5 months.

What is the main difference between your country of origin and the Netherlands?

I came from Hungary. I am sure every country has its own struggles, but as far as I can see from this short period of time... things are just working here.

It seems to me, that the Netherlands can offer good jobs and has an excellent infrastructure. (Bicycle)roads, buildings, interior design. I want to give a really easy example: chairs in the libraries are so comfortable, you prefer studying there and not at home (we have wooden and uncomfortable chairs in Hungary). Here, in Leiden it is interesting that people like to "show" their houses, usually they don’t have curtains. It was funny at first, to see all those beautiful interior designs inside different flats. Also it was good to experience that most of the people know  English, it is common here, but not at home. The food is maybe a big difference, Hungary has a big gastronomy, we eat cooked lunch, not only sandwiches as I have seen lots of people do here.

What would you miss most about the Netherlands if you were to leave tomorrow?

Very easy question: first of all: friends I met here, then clean environment, buildings, canals and cycling next to the canals while looking at those buildings.

How would you describe the Dutch people?

Straight-forward, hard-working, kind, English speakers, also a bit self-contained, keep oneself to oneself as a "northern" person.

Do you have any tips for new arrivals in the Leiden region?

During the day: walk around the city, explore different tiny things, at night go to a nice pub (if I can suggest: Estaminet Schommelen), then go to the market on Saturday morning :)
