Update on International Primary School in Leiden

13 November 2020

The establishment of a new international primary school in Leiden is delayed because a new school board is currently being sought.

By our partner Municipality of Leiden.

In the Leiden region, on the west side of Leiden, there is a need for internationally oriented primary education (IGBO). An IGBO is a school where students follow an internationally recognized curriculum in an English-language teaching environment. There are many internationals in Leiden and the surrounding region who would like to send their children to an international primary school and the municipality of Leiden is preparing for the temporary accommodation of an IGBO on Saffierstraat. Establishing an internationally oriented primary school is the responsibility of a school board. Recently, the PROOLeiden-Leiderdorp school board indicated that the realization of the new school is currently too risky due to the corona pandemic and the finances. The establishment of the international school has therefore come to a halt for the time being.

The municipality is talking to another school board to see whether they want to establish an international school. As soon as another school board has definitively decided to take over the IGBO and the municipality has more clarity about the next steps, more information will follow about the process and the content of the plans for the new international primary school.
