Successful first BMW MINI Rally for Internationals in the Leiden Region

21 September 2019

Leiden, September 30th, 2019 - On Saturday the 21st of September, Expat Centre Leiden and Van Poelgeest BMW MINI collaborated to provide the expats of the Leiden Region with their very first car rally. Expats were given the opportunity to explore the region while completing assignments and meeting new people.

About 28 internationals participated in the ECL Rally resulting in 8 rally teams. Each team had to figure out and follow directions, while answering questions on life in Leiden. The route took them through the region, passing through Voorhout, Sassenheim, Warmond, Oegstgeest – with a quick stop at Villa Beukenhof – Leiden BioScience Park, lake Valkenburg, Valkenburg airport and Katwijk boulevard.

Joint cooperation

Van Poelgeest Noordwijk, a BMW and MINI car dealership, provided each team with a BMW i3, an electric model of BMW. Driving the electronic model was also part of the Rally, as the amount of Kilowatts consumed per hour would be added on top of the amount of correct answers. The Van Poelgeest office in Noordwijkerhout was the starting point and finish of the Rally and provided plenty of opportunity for participants to Meet & Mingle while enjoy food and beverages. “It is amazing to see how open, diverse and enthusiastic these people are. It’s such a great atmosphere. An honour to host this event. ” says Michel Heus, director of Van Poelgeest Noordwijk.

Some participants were surprised by the interpretation of a Rally, as it was not about speed or driving through muddy pathways, but about figuring out the correct route and doing assignments along the way. “We would call this a treasure hunt. Not what I expected, but we had a lot of fun!” said Sheila Owen.

Finally, the winning team(s!) were announced! Unbelievably, two teams had exactly the same amount of correct answers and the same amount of consumed KW/ph. A perfect draw stunned everyone! The 8 winners were awarded with a laptop sleeve and two of those lucky people won, by drawing a ticket, a BMW i3 for a weekend!
