Brexit residence permits

3 November 2020

As of 1 January 2021 a Dutch residence permit is required for UK nationals and/or their family members who are living or planning to start living in the Netherlands. Before said date UK nationals can continue to live, work and study in the Netherlands without a Dutch residence permit.

This is brought to You by our partner, Limes International

To apply for a Dutch residence permit, one must:

- live in the Netherlands
- be registered in the Dutch population register (BRP) at a local Municipality
- have a DigiD (Digital Identification), which allows access to many services and government websites in the Netherlands
- receive the post digitally via MijnOverheid, and
- have a Dutch bank account

The IND has sent invitation letters to apply for a Dutch residence permit to all UK nationals and/or their family members until August 2020. As of August 2020, the IND no longer sends invitation letters. Which means that UK nationals and/or their family members who registered or will register in the BRP after August 2020 must meet all the above mentioned criteria and apply online for a Dutch residence permit as soon as possible, but at least prior to 31 December 2020. Also, UK nationals and/or their family members who are registered in the BRP (and meet all the above mentioned criteria), but did not receive an invitation letter should apply online for a Dutch residence permit as soon as possible, but at least prior to 31 December 2020.

Once the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) receives the application for a Dutch residence permit, an invitation is sent to schedule an appointment to submit biometric details (i.e. fingerprints, passport photo and signature). Biometric details are required in order to process a Dutch residence permit and this appointment can be scheduled at appointed IND locations via the IND website.

As of this summer, the IND will send Dutch residence permits to home addresses by courier.

If you are unable to submit your application for a Dutch residence permit in time, please feel free to contact us.
