Prinsjesdag: the 3rd Tuesday of September – what is prinsjesdag?

Every year, on the third Tuesday of September, Prinsjesdag takes place. It is the festive opening of the new working year of the Staten Generaal (States General: the Senate and the House of Representatives/Eerste en Tweede Kamer).

This year, on Prinsjesdag, His Majesty the King will ride to the Binnenhof in the Hague in the Glass Coach and deliver the Speech from the Throne during the joint session of the States General. The Speech from the Throne contains the government’s most important plans for the year to come. The joint session is attended by ministers and state secretaries, representatives of the Diplomatic Corps (Corps Diplomatique) and the High Councils of State (Council of State/Raad van State, Netherlands Court of Audit/Algemene Rekenkamer, National Ombudsman, King’s Office/Kabinet van de Koning, Supreme Council of Nobility/Hoge Raad van Adel and Chancery of the Netherlands Orders of Knighthood/Kanselarij der Nederlandse Orden) and other representatives from various sectors in society.

King Willem-Alexander will depart from Paleis Noordeinde at 13.00 hrs and travel to the Ridderzaal, accompanied by Queen Máxima, Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien.

At approximately 14.00 hrs, the King will depart from the Ridderzaal in the Glass Coach. He will travel back to Paleis Noordeinde, where he will make a balcony appearance.
