Leiden - Sahib Pashazade Duo Concert

Mugham Music from Azerbaijan

Apart from the western classical music tradition one can find all sorts of non-western classical music traditions too. Mostly known are those from India (raga), Persia (dastgah) and Arabia (maqam). But also Azerbaijan (literally Land of Fire) has got such a tradition called mugham.

The mugham is a combination of Persian art music (dastgah) that was played at the courts and the music from the bards (ashiqs) from the Caucasian mountains.

The Sahib Pashazade Duo plays impressive instrumental mugham on tar (short-necked lute) en nagara (drum). Both artists are true masters on their instruments. They are known for their breathtaking musicality, charismatic stage presence and boisterous playfulness.

Both studied at the Conservatory in Baku and earned a lot of prices and titles, amongst others that of 'Tar Paganini' for Sahib Pashazade. Kamran Kerimov stems not only from well-known family percussion players, but he is also one of the key figures in the Azeri percussion scene and he works with a lot of top artists. Prepare for a night of musical fireworks!
