The sonorous sound of the sarangi
The sarangi is a bowed instrument from India. Its name means 'hundred colours', because of the huge variety of sounds and emotions this instrument is able to produce.
Sabir Khan is an absolute master on this beautiful instrument. In his style both rhythm and melody are important. His father and guru is Ustad Sultan Khan, the legendary sarangi maestro. The first time he came in contact with music was when he was 6 years old. He played his first live concert when he was 7. In the meantime he played with all the big names from the Indian music scene: with tabla players like Zakir Hussain and Kumar Bose, but also with Bollywood stars like Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar.
This time Sabir Khan will be accompanied by the Dutch tabla virtuoso Heiko Dijker. He studied at the Rotterdam Conservatorium (Codarts) and is known for his energetic and enthused playing. His deep knowledge of Indian rhythms clearly shines through. One of his gurus was Faiyaz Khan, and he played with legends like Hariprasad Chaurasia, Bahauddin Dagar en Birju Maharaj.T
Sabir Khan and Heiko Dijker will bring a program of Hindustani classical music.
