Shopping

Leiden is a shopper's delight. There are dozens of shops in the city centre just a short walk away from the main train station. The shops are concentrated in the Haarlemmerstraat, Breestraat, Lange Mare, Nieuwe Rijn, Burgsteeg, Hogewoerd and Doezastraat. The bustling pedestrian shopping areas in these streets are a home to a host of shops, ranging from tiny establishments to major stores. The streets are connected by dozens of little streets and alleyways where you can find a large variety of wonderful boutiques. With an abundance of antiques dealers, second hand shops and antiquarian bookshops the Pieterswijk area is a favourite for shopping and strolling in its charming surroundings.

The boutiques in the little side streets and alleyways in the historic downtown area make shopping a special treat. Follow the lively Haarlemmerstraat and take the stately Hooglandse Kerkgracht route to the Pieterswijk area where you can wander around the antiques and clothing shops in the centuries-old alleyways.

The numerous cafes, lunchrooms, brasseries and restaurants in the shopping district offer you plenty of options for taking a moment to unwind with a refreshment and a comfy chair.

Good service, friendly staff and quality products. Look, choose and buy in the numerous inviting antiques dealers and antiquarian bookshops, one-of-a-kind clothing shops, delicatessens, gift shops and galleries or any of the other eye-catching shops Leiden has to offer.

Opening hours / shopping Sunday

Most of the shops in downtown Leiden are open on the last Sunday of the month. Opening hours are extended during the December month. A number of major stores are open every Sunday.

Fairs and markets

The Leiden market offers a different kind of shopping altogether: here you will find exotic spices, clothing, vegetables, fruit, fish, nuts and flowers.

Leiden's markets add a special touch to the city. You will find an extensive general market along the docks at the Botermarkt, Vismarkt and Nieuwe Rijn on Wednesday and Saturday. Vendors selling fruit, veg, fish, flowers, clothing, specialty foods from all over the world, gifts… basically, you name it, the Leiden market has it!

Do not worry about missing out on a good bargain. The vendors at the Leiden market are known for puting on quite a (loud) show in order to make sure you hear about their special deals and quality - a city tradition that has been carried on for 900 years.
