War & Peace – Eisler and Schumann

War & Peace – Eisler and Schumann

Schumann’s Dichterliebe appears to be a cycle of love songs, though beneath all the love, an ironic bitterness lies hidden. Hans Eisler’s Hollywood Songbook (written during his period of exile during de ‘40s) takes it even deeper. This opus gained him his reputation as the best song composer of the 20th century. Poems by Brecht, Goethe, Shakespeare, Mörike and Hölderlin in a mix of styles. Some songs last no longer than two minutes: concentrated emotional clarity, free from sentiments.
